General description
CD4 is a 55 kDa glycoprotein with four immunoglobulin-like external domains, a transmembrane domain and a highly conserved intracellular domain (Leong, 1999). CD4 acts as a coreceptor in MHC class II-restricted antigen-induced T-cell activation. Further, CD4 has a role in the regulation of T-B lymphocyte adhesion in the absence of antigen recognition, and in thymic differentiation (Piatier-Tonneau, 2002). CD4 is expressed on thymocyte subsets, it marks helper/inducer T cells, and it is expressed in 55-65% of mature peripheral T cells. Subpopulations of suppressor or cytotoxic T cells can be identified among CD4-positive T cells. CD4 is also expressed on monocytes/macrophages, Langerhans cells and other dendritic cells. CD4 is not expressed on B cells. Anti-CD4, MT310, was included in the Second International Workshop and Conference on Human Leucocyte Differentiation Antigens, and studies by a number of laboratories confirmed its reactivity with the CD4 antigen (Miedema, 1986).
